Australia’s first green hydrogen and gas power plant now one step closer

NSW is set to be home to Australia’s first dual fuel capable hydrogen/gas power plant following an $83 million funding agreement for the Tallawarra B project in the Illawarra. Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the project is vital infrastructure needed to provide dispatchable electricity capacity to replace the Liddell Power Station and create the industries and jobs of the future. “Delivering enough electricity to power around 150,000 homes at times of peak demand, the project is expected to deliver a $300 million boost to the economy and support about 250 jobs during construction,” Mr Barilaro said... more

Santos inks new gas supply agreement with Rio Tinto

Santos has signed a new gas supply agreement with Rio Tinto. Under the agreement, Santos will supply up to 15 petajoules (PJs) of natural gas to Rio Tinto commencing in late 2021. Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Gallagher, said Rio has been a long-term buyer of gas from Santos and they look forward to the strong partnership continuing. “We have been supplying natural gas to Rio for many years. West Barracouta commences natural gas supply to Australia’s east coast

Esso Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd, has announced the commissioning of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture’s West Barracouta natural gas field in the Bass Strait offshore of Victoria. The West Barracouta gas development has involved the drilling of two gas production wells and the construction of associated subsea gas production facilities to access gas in the existing Barracouta field. West Barracouta gas will be delivered through a five-kilometre pipeline via a new connection into the existing Barracouta pipeline so that the gas flows directly to the Longford Gas Plants.... more

AGL withdraws works approval for floating gas terminal at Crib Point

On 9 April 2021, Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) received notification that AGL had withdrawn its works approval for a floating gas terminal at Crib Point in Westernport Bay. As a result, the EPA will no longer be making a decision under section 19B of the Environment Protection Act 1970 in relation to the project. AGL and APA Group’s proposed project comprised the Crib Point floating storage and regassification unit (FSRU); jetty works and a receiving facility at Crib Point; and 57 kilometres of pipeline from Crib Point to Pakenham. Buru to commence major drilling program in the Canning Basin

Buru Energy Limited will commence a major drilling program in the Canning Basin in Western Australia in June. The program includes a three well drilling program and an extensive 2D seismic program of some 1,100 kilometres of data acquisition. The two well exploration drilling program is on conventional oil prospects (Rafael and Kurrajong), targeting very significant prospective resources as set out in the Buru Energy ASX release of 22 March 2021. Buru Energy’s Ungani Oilfield production declines

Production from Buru Energy's Ungani Oilfield, located approximately 90 kilometres east of Broome, has continued to be impacted by wet weather with the Ungani access road being closed intermittently due to heavy rainfall. Late wet season rains have also resulted in the closure of the Great Northern Highway export route to all traffic on a number of occasions. This has resulted in a later than expected oil lifting, but the increase in the oil price from the previous liftings has been a compensating factor to the lower production volumes. Gas import terminal ruled out due to environmental impacts

The Victorian Government has today ruled out a proposal to establish a gas import terminal at Crib Point in Western Port and to construct an approximately 57-kilometre long pipeline from the terminal to Pakenham. Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, concluded that marine discharges from the proposed AGL and APA project would have unacceptable effects on the environment in Western Port, which is listed as a Ramsar wetland of international significance. Amec Foster Wheeler has announced that its Clough AMEC joint venture has been awarded a three year contract by ConocoPhillips to provide asset support, operations and maintenance services to the Bayu-Undan offshore field development, located in the Timor Sea. A contract by Preem AB, the largest fuel company in Sweden, has awarded a contract for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction management (EPCm) of their Lysekil refinery’s new Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU). The new facility will manufacture Vacuum Gas Oil hence removing the need for its import.
