ADNOC deploys AI-powered well control solution at offshore NASR field

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced the deployment of RoboWell, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) autonomous well-control solution, at its offshore NASR field.

This marks the world’s first offshore implementation of RoboWell, showcasing ADNOC’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies for enhanced efficiency and responsible energy production.

Developed in partnership with Abu Dhabi-based AIQ, RoboWell utilises cloud-based AI algorithms to autonomously operate wells, allowing them to self-adjust according to changing conditions.

This advanced technology enhances well safety, improves operational efficiency, and reduces the need for physical interventions, thereby minimising emissions.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC Upstream Executive Director, emphasised the company’s goal of becoming the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.

He stated: “The offshore deployment of RoboWell at NASR field demonstrates how ADNOC is harnessing the power of AI as we responsibly meet growing global energy demand.”

The NASR field, located 130 km northwest of Abu Dhabi, is a fully digital offshore facility employing various technological solutions to maximise production while minimising emissions.

RoboWell has been initially deployed across 10 wells at NASR, with plans to extend its implementation to over 300 wells across ADNOC’s offshore and onshore operations this year.

Dr Chris Cooper, AIQ CEO, highlighted the significant benefits of RoboWell, stating: “RoboWell has already been proven to deliver up to 30 per cent optimisation in gas lift consumption and up to 5 per cent increase in operating efficiency.”

This expanded implementation represents a crucial step for both AIQ and ADNOC in optimising operations and extracting greater value from resources.

RoboWell was developed through collaboration between AIQ and ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Center, a state-of-the-art facility that leverages big data, digitalisation, and smart analytics to enhance access to hydrocarbon resources and improve reservoir performance.

The technology was first deployed in 2023 at the onshore NEB field, ADNOC’s inaugural “smart field”.

This deployment of RoboWell at the NASR field underscores ADNOC’s commitment to integrating AI across its operations, from the control room to the boardroom, as it strives to meet growing global energy demand responsibly and efficiently.
