ADNOC unveils cutting-edge AI technology to revolutionise operations

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has announced the deployment of Neuron 5, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled process optimisation technology, marking a significant leap forward in the oil and gas industry’s digital transformation.

Developed in-house by ADNOC, Neuron 5 has been initially implemented at two key locations; ADNOC Onshore’s Northeast Bab (NEB) field, and ADNOC Gas’s Taweelah gas compression plant.

The system autonomously monitors the performance of hundreds of critical equipment pieces, utilising advanced AI models and deep learning algorithms.

By interpreting data such as pressure, temperature, and vibration from sensors, Neuron 5 predicts maintenance needs and monitors equipment performance, enabling process optimisation, preventative maintenance, reduced operational downtime, increased efficiency, and decreased need for manual inspections.

Following its successful initial deployment, ADNOC plans to roll out Neuron 5 across all its facilities, encompassing thousands of critical production assets.

The pilot phase has shown promising results, indicating that the technology could reduce unplanned shutdowns by up to 50 per cent, enhance planned maintenance intervals by 20 per cent, and free up operators for more productive activities.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC Upstream Executive Director, emphasised the company’s commitment to AI integration, stating: “ADNOC is placing AI at the heart of its operations and leveraging industry-leading advanced technologies to help responsibly meet the world’s growing energy demand.

“The development and deployment of Neuron 5 across our upstream and downstream facilities demonstrates this strategy in action and highlights our continued progress towards our vision to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company.”

ADNOC Gas has deployed Neuron 5 at its Taweelah plant, supporting efforts to provide uninterrupted gas supply to major industries in Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates.

This deployment aligns with ADNOC’s broader mission to enhance asset efficiency and performance through advanced technologies.

Neuron 5 is the result of a collaborative effort between ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Centre, AIQ, and AVEVA.

This partnership underscores ADNOC’s commitment to fostering innovation and leveraging expertise across the industry.

As ADNOC continues to embrace AI and digital technologies, Neuron 5 stands as a testament to the company’s vision of becoming a leader in AI-enabled energy operations, setting a new standard for efficiency and reliability in the oil and gas sector.
