Halliburton has expanded its geothermal technology portfolio with the launch of the RangeStar™ Geothermal Well Spacing and Intercept Service, a next-generation solution designed to accelerate geothermal development through greater accuracy and integration in well placement.
Part of Halliburton’s RangeStar™ family of magnetic ranging services, the new system is specifically engineered for the complex and variable conditions found in geothermal reservoirs.
By combining advanced magnetic ranging and drilling optimisation technologies, it enables operators to make faster, more precise decisions while reducing operational complexity.
“With the RangeStar Geothermal Well Spacing and Intercept Service, Halliburton redefines how geothermal operators approach well intercepts and magnetic ranging operations,” said Jim Collins, vice president, Halliburton Sperry Drilling.
“The service brings together proven technologies in a unified solution designed to improve accuracy and strengthen overall well execution.”
The RangeStar Geothermal Well Spacing and Intercept Service delivers reliable performance that simplifies operations, reduces uncertainty, and improves overall execution in geothermal environments.
Its rapid ranging determination feature shortens decision-making time from hours to minutes, enabling detection distances of up to 130 metres and enhancing accuracy across varying formations and depths.
Configured as an all-inclusive bottomhole assembly, the system consolidates both short- and long-distance detection capabilities into a single configuration.
This design eliminates the need for multiple tools often required in traditional ranging approaches, helping operators lower execution risks and improve wellbore precision.
Halliburton highlighted the solution’s ability to deliver high-quality data acquisition closer to the bit while maintaining efficient hole cleaning and stable drilling performance.
The integrated design aims to boost overall geothermal project efficiency and reduce the cost and time associated with complex drilling operations.
The service integrates seamlessly with Halliburton’s suite of intelligent drilling platforms, including the iStar® intelligent drilling and logging platform, the LOGIX™ automation and remote operations solutions, and the iCruise® intelligent rotary steerable system.
Together, these systems create connected workflows that pave the way for automation-driven ranging and remote operations.
According to Halliburton, this fully integrated solution positions the company at the forefront of automated geothermal ranging operations, enabling more reliable well interception and efficient geothermal field development.
By enhancing precision drilling in challenging conditions, the RangeStar Geothermal Well Spacing and Intercept Service supports the global push for cleaner energy through advanced geothermal resource utilisation.
