Global ocean infrastructure leader SBM Offshore has formed a joint venture with Solstad Offshore to build a next-generation multi-purpose deepwater installation and construction vessel.
Targeted for delivery in the first half of 2029, the state-of-the-art vessel will support the installation of major ocean infrastructure, including floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units. The initiative underpins both companies’ commitments to driving a sustainable blue economy.
The partnership builds on the previous operational success of the Normand Installer, combining SBM Offshore’s specialised installation expertise with Solstad’s extensive track record in offshore support vessel operations.
Optimised for both shallow and deepwater environments, the vessel’s advanced design aims to significantly mitigate execution risks for clients while improving schedule and cost predictability.
According to SBM Offshore, securing the new asset ensures the continuity of its full-lifecycle engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and operation (EPCIO) offering. By integrating broader offshore installation work scopes internally, the company aims to establish a stronger competitive advantage and boost delivery reliability across its global portfolio.
Under the terms of the joint venture, Solstad Offshore will hold a majority 50.1 per cent stake, with SBM Offshore retaining the remaining 49.9 per cent.
Solstad Shipping is slated to take on the role of ship manager, while SBM Offshore will charter the vessel directly for its own projects. When the vessel is not required for SBM Offshore assignments, the joint venture will look to charter the asset to third-party operators.
Lars Peder Solstad, CEO of Solstad Offshore ASA, said: “This project represents an important strategic step for Solstad Offshore.
“Together with SBM Offshore, we are further developing a partnership that has evolved over more than two decades, building on the proven performance of Normand Installer and extending our installation capabilities into the future.”
SBM Offshore is a global leader in deepwater ocean infrastructure, delivering floating production solutions across the full asset lifecycle — from design and construction to installation and operation.
The new build marks a proactive step by the energy infrastructure giant to expand its operational capabilities and transition toward lower-carbon energy production.
