British energy major bp has appointed Ian Tyler as Chair of the company, assuming the role from Albert Manifold.
Tyler assumes the role immediately, having served as Interim Chair since May. He originally joined the bp board as a non-executive director in April 2025.
With a long non-executive career spanning listed and private companies across natural resources, oil and gas, and engineering, Tyler brings a wealth of governance experience to the position. He has worked alongside more than 15 chief executives throughout his career.
Currently, he serves as Chair of Grafton Group plc and Senior Independent Director of Anglo American plc, alongside previous leadership roles at Cairn Energy, BAE Systems, and Balfour Beatty.
Commenting on the appointment, Dame Amanda Blanc, bp’s Senior Independent Director, highlighted Tyler’s strong governance track record.
“I am delighted that the board has unanimously appointed Ian Tyler as Chair of bp. Ian brings significant experience providing challenge and support to executive teams, while maintaining strong governance and oversight on behalf of shareholders,” Blanc said, noting that his leadership and integrity during his tenure as Interim Chair secured the confidence of both the board and executive management.
Tyler stated he was honoured by the appointment and praised CEO Meg O’Neill’s recent impact.
“I will lead the board’s evolution, ensuring we have the depth, experience and capabilities needed to support the company’s strategic priorities and long-term value creation,” Tyler said.
He also committed to establishing regular, transparent engagement with shareholders.
In a tandem announcement, bp confirmed that Dame Amanda Blanc will not stand for re-election at the 2027 AGM.
Blanc will step down from the board once a successor for her Senior Independent Director role is appointed.
Tyler’s appointment comes after Manifold was ousted over “serious concerns” about his tenure.
