Woodside Energy has successfully concluded its expression of interest (EOI) process for domestic gas sales in eastern Australia, reinforcing its commitment to regional energy security.
The process, which covered the years 2025 and 2026, resulted in the execution of contracts for 77 petajoules of gas across 14 customers in the manufacturing and energy sectors.
Liz Westcott, Woodside’s Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer in Australia, emphasised the direct impact of these sales on local consumers.
“Every molecule of natural gas Woodside sells in eastern Australia is consumed by local manufacturers, power generators and homes,” she stated.
The EOI process, launched in the first quarter of 2024, garnered significant attention from potential buyers, with demand exceeding available supply.
Westcott described the outcome as “a win-win for Woodside and our customers,” noting that it secures necessary gas volumes for customers over the next two years.
This initiative underscores the critical role of natural gas in maintaining energy security and supporting manufacturing in southeastern Australia.
It is expected to contribute to job stability and ensure a consistent energy supply for both industrial and residential consumers.
While the EOI process adhered to the Australian Government’s Gas Market Code, Woodside has called for further action to address future gas shortfalls predicted by the Australian Energy Market Operator.
The company is advocating for a collaborative approach involving state and federal governments, regulators, industry participants, and infrastructure owners to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy aimed at reducing structural pressures on gas prices.
This move by Woodside aligns with its broader commitment to Australia’s energy landscape.
The company has previously pledged to increase gas flows to Western Australia’s domestic market, promising an additional 32PJ by the end of 2025.
As Australia navigates its energy transition, Woodside’s actions reflect the ongoing importance of natural gas in the nation’s energy mix, balancing immediate needs with long-term sustainability goals.
