In a significant move to boost its exploration capabilities, PETRONAS, through its Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) division, has announced strategic partnerships with Earth Science Analytics (ESA) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
These collaborations aim to harness advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to accelerate exploration efforts in the Malay Basin and enhance the data capabilities of PETRONAS‘ myPROdata platform.
The partnership with ESA focuses on developing cutting-edge AI-driven subsurface workflows.
By utilising ESA’s EarthNET platform in conjunction with PETRONAS myPROdata, the initiative aims to boost subsurface data analytics and interpretation.
This collaboration is expected to optimise hydrocarbon exploration in the mature Malay Basin, offshore Peninsular Malaysia.
Simultaneously, PETRONAS is collaborating with AWS to enhance the myPROdata platform through AI and data analytics.
AWS will implement advanced AI and ML functionalities to improve user experience and streamline data management processes.
This integration is set to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the platform, enabling potential investors to make more informed, data-driven decisions in Malaysia’s exploration and production (E&P) sector.
Datuk Ir. Bacho Pilong, Senior Vice President of MPM, emphasised the importance of these collaborations, stating: “These collaborations are pivotal in reinforcing PETRONAS’ commitment to innovation as we gear up for Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2025.
“By leveraging advanced AI and ML capabilities, we aim to empower our investors and Petroleum Arrangement Contractors with richer data insights and more streamlined processes, driving smarter decision-making and ensuring a more efficient, impactful bid round for all participants.”
The partnerships come at a crucial time as PETRONAS prepares for the Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2025, scheduled for early 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.
The MBR is an annual licensing round that offers diverse upstream opportunities to potential investors, including exploration acreages, Discovered Resource Opportunities, and late-life producing assets across Malaysia.
While focusing on technological advancements, PETRONAS remains committed to ensuring an optimal and sustainable supply of oil and gas for Malaysia’s energy security.
The company is simultaneously pursuing efforts to achieve low-carbon and low-emission operations, aligning with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
These strategic partnerships and technological advancements position PETRONAS at the forefront of innovation in the oil and gas industry, potentially setting new standards for exploration and production in the region.
