BP has begun production at its Atlantis Major Facility Expansion project in the US Gulf of Mexico, adding roughly 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) to output from the long-running Atlantis field.
The expansion centres on two new subsea water injection wells at the field, situated about 150 miles south of New Orleans.
These wells are designed to boost pressure within specific reservoirs, a technique that helps push more oil toward production wells and lengthens the productive life of the overall field.
Alongside the new wells, BP installed additional subsea trees and new water injection pumps on the topside of the Atlantis platform, upgrades meant to support the increased injection capacity.
BP said the project reached completion ahead of its original schedule and came in under budget, a notable outcome given the complexity of subsea infrastructure work in deepwater environments.
Atlantis is operated by BP, which holds a 56 per cent stake in the field.
The remaining 44 percent belongs to Woodside Energy, which gained its position through the company’s 2022 merger with BHP Petroleum.
Based on its ownership share, BP expects to see about 5,000 boepd of the expansion’s added output flow to its own production totals.
Andy Krieger, BP’s senior vice president for the Gulf of America and Canada, framed the expansion as evidence of continued potential in a mature asset.
“Atlantis has been one of the anchors of our Gulf business for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves there is still more value to be generated.”
He added that the project extends the life of a productive asset while supporting regional jobs and investment, and does so by making use of infrastructure already in place rather than building new facilities from scratch.
Atlantis has a long history in BP’s Gulf of Mexico portfolio.
The field was discovered in 1998, though production did not begin until October 2007 following delays tied to hurricane activity in 2005.
Full commissioning and a ramp-up to steady production followed in December of that year, and the field hit peak output in late 2008.
The Atlantis platform sits in water roughly 7,074 feet deep and extends across five blocks, a scale that reflects the scope of deepwater engineering BP has applied to the site over nearly two decades of operation.
The Major Facility Expansion adds to a broader push by BP to grow its Gulf of Mexico production.
The company has also greenlit development of two additional platforms, Kaskida and Tiber, which are expected to bring a combined 160,000 barrels per day of new production capacity online in the region before the end of the decade.
Together, these projects point to a strategy of extracting additional value from established fields like Atlantis while simultaneously building new capacity, positioning the Gulf of Mexico as a continued area of focus for BP’s upstream operations in the years ahead.
