Promising results at Who Dat East exploration well

MEXICO: Karoon Energy Ltd. has announced promising initial results from the Who Dat East exploration/appraisal well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Intermediate logging has confirmed the presence of high-quality, hydrocarbon-bearing sands in the upper target sections, with several deeper targets still to be drilled.

Key Findings

  • Preliminary interpretation indicates an aggregate net pay thickness of 44 metres measured depth
  • Two discrete reservoir units account for 31 metres of net pay
  • Average porosity of 25 per cent and permeabilities ranging from 300mD to over 1,000mD
  • Gas condensate hydrocarbon fluid type interpreted, as expected

Karoon reports that the Who Dat East well (MC 509-1) has reached a depth of 6,614 metres measured depth in the 12-¼” hole section.

After setting the 9-⅞” casing, the well will continue drilling to the planned total depth of 7,900 metres.

Logging while drilling (LWD) and wireline logging data have indicated multiple hydrocarbon-bearing sandstones within the targeted Middle Miocene turbidite sequences.

Further analysis of wireline logs, reservoir fluid samples, and geoscience data will be conducted to determine the resource potential.

Upon reaching total depth, the well will be suspended as a potential future producer pending further evaluation of the results.

Karoon Energy‘s CEO and Managing Director, Dr Julian Fowles, commented: “Preliminary interpretation of the well data from the Who Dat East exploration/appraisal well is positive. The early results indicate the potential for a continuous hydrocarbon phase in a number of high-quality sands correlated to the nearby MC-509 Exxon #1 exploration well.

“Once the remaining targets have been drilled and final TD logging completed, we shall be in a better position to evaluate any potential impact on hydrocarbon volumetrics at Who Dat East, with a view to determining the commerciality of a potential development.”

Dr Fowles added: “This early success at Who Dat East supports our belief that there is exploration upside potential that can be unlocked surrounding Who Dat.”

Karoon Energy is an international oil and gas exploration company with assets in Brazil, Peru, and the Gulf of Mexico.
