South Korea has pledged US$50 billion-plus (AU$72.04 billion) investment to support the Alaska LNG pipeline and export facility, providing a financial boost to propel the massive energy infrastructure initiative toward a final investment decision and construction.
The multi-billion-dollar initiative marks a pivotal milestone for the long-planned development, establishing the necessary capital foundation to advance the project into its build phase.
Alaska LNG comprises an 807-mile, or 1300-kilometre, natural gas pipeline stretching from Alaska’s North Slope to meet local domestic energy needs, alongside a North Slope gas treatment plant and a 20-million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) export terminal located in Nikiski, Alaska.
Lead developer Glenfarne holds a 75 per cent majority stake in the project, with the State of Alaska owning the remaining 25 per cent through the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation.
Over the past 18 months, Glenfarne has secured crucial commercial agreements covering supply, labour, engineering, and equipment, now accounting for 13 MTPA of its 16 MTPA target required to lock in the final investment decision.
Brendan Duval, CEO of Glenfarne Group, welcomed the international deal, emphasising its role in accelerating energy security and regional development.
“This U.S.-Korea investment initiative creates a promising new path to bring together the capital needed to accelerate Alaska LNG toward final investment decision and construction,” Duval said.
“Today’s announcement brings together the capital needed to accelerate Alaska LNG to a final investment decision and construction. We are ready to deliver on the opportunity Alaska LNG represents for Alaska and the United States.”
Adam Prestidge, President of Glenfarne Alaska LNG, added that the substantial capital injection brings Alaskans significantly closer to job creation, workforce expansion, and long-term economic benefits.
Glenfarne will now collaborate closely with both the US and South Korean governments to finalise the investment framework and complete the remaining regulatory and commercial steps.
