TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner AMNI International have reached a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the offshore Ima gas field development, unlocking a key supply source for the Nigeria LNG liquefaction plant.
Located in shallow waters near Bonny Island and straddling the OML 112 and 117 licences, the project features a simplified offshore platform connected to the Nigeria LNG facility via a 22-kilometre pipeline.
TotalEnergies operates the asset with a 40 per cent interest, alongside AMNI, which holds the remaining 60 per cent.
Scheduled for first production in 2028, the field is projected to reach a plateau production rate of 350 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to over 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily.
Once operational, the Ima field will supply approximately one-third of the feedstock required for the ongoing Nigeria LNG Train 7 expansion project, which aims to boost plant liquefaction capacity from 22 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 30 Mtpa.
Designed with low-carbon operations in mind, the platform will be powered entirely by electric power supplied from shore, eliminate routine flaring, and integrate permanent methane detection and monitoring systems.
The development will also feature strong local involvement, with key contracts awarded to local companies and approximately 60 per cent of the workforce sourced directly from host communities.
Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies, described the investment decision as a crucial milestone in deploying the company’s integrated gas strategy.
“After the Ubeta project sanctioned in 2024 and expected to start-up next year, Ima demonstrates again our ability to unlock new low-cost and low-emissions gas resources, following the incentives introduced by the Nigerian government for non-associated gas developments,” Terraz said.
“This new project will contribute significantly to Nigeria LNG gas supply and create lasting value for its partners and for Nigeria.”
TotalEnergies has been present in Nigeria for more than 60 years, with Nigeria one of the main contributing countries to TotalEnergies’ hydrocarbon production with 188,000 boe/d produced in 2025.
