Woodside Petroleum Ltd has announced the appointment of Anthony (Tony) O’Neill as a non-executive Director, effective June 3, 2024.
Mr O’Neill brings extensive experience in the global mining industry, with a strong focus on sustainability, decarbonisation, and operational excellence.
His appointment reinforces Woodside‘s commitment to strategic growth and responsible energy production.

Goyder stated that O’Neill’s distinguished career and transformational work in the mining sector, coupled with his expertise in climate initiatives and sustainability, will be invaluable as the company continues to navigate the energy transition and pursue growth opportunities globally.
Mr O’Neill’s career spans leadership roles across multiple countries and commodities.
He recently retired from Anglo American as Group Executive Director of Technical and Sustainability, where he oversaw groundbreaking initiatives such as the world’s first deployment of hydrogen-powered mining trucks and the company’s FutureSmart Mining, Waterless Mine, Living Mine, and 2040 Net Zero strategy.
“His experience in delivering outstanding operational performance along with his strategic thinking will be invaluable to Woodside,” added Mr Goyder.
Mr O’Neill holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Mining Technology) from Curtin University in Western Australia and an MBA from the University of Melbourne.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
As an independent non-executive Director, Mr O’Neill will serve on Woodside’s Audit & Risk, Sustainability, and Nominations & Governance Committees.
He will stand for election as a non-executive Director at the company’s Annual General Meeting in April 2025.
