Australia’s offshore energy sector is approaching a defining transition. Operators and subsea contractors are facing a growing challenge: how to safely remove subsea infrastructure at scale while reducing costs, environmental impacts and operational complexity.
The industry has a structural disease: fragmented evidence, slow decision pathways, siloed actors, and operators reluctant to move because the downside risk of poorly executed action is more visible than the upside.
Restore Subsea believes better subsea restoration pathways must be developed – reducing costs, environmental impacts, and turning subsea decommissioning from a liability into a reuse opportunity.
Restore Subsea is an Australian subsea decommissioning technology company developing proprietary operating intelligence for the removal, recovery and repurposing of offshore infrastructure.
The company leverages an AI-native R&D and operating system to develop its flagship X-Lay® system. This is the company’s first commercial proof application – demonstrating a broader philosophy focused on solving repeated, expensive and poorly coordinated offshore removal challenges.
X-Lay® is a patented subsea pipeline retrieval system designed to provide Restore Subsea’s partners with an alternative approach to pipeline removal by applying proven pipelay principles in reverse, while inducing controlled plastic deformation. The technology is on a pathway to radically reduce removal costs, while improving restoration and recycling outcomes.
Restore Subsea’s initial focus is subsea pipeline recovery, but the company’s broader opportunity lies in developing a portfolio of additional repeatable and scalable solutions for its partners that improve subsea decommissioning execution across a wide range of subsea restoration needs, globally.
The company is currently progressing X-Lay® through DNV technology qualification under DNV-RP-A203 and will complete the Endorsement of Qualification this month, targeting Completion of Qualification in Q4 2026. This is aligned with operational readiness for CODA’s forecast subsea pipeline removal scope priorities in Australia and similar offshore infrastructure globally.
Restore Subsea recently received support through the WA government’s Innovation Booster Grant program and is progressing potential Commonwealth funding pathways, including a seven-partner consortium supported by two universities, one operator and three contractors.
Restore Subsea is also readying itself to support clients and partners globally. This includes being selected (from a short list of 110+ applications) to showcase to a group of leading investors and industry experts at Tech Tour Ocean 2026 in Norway this month, returning again in August, together with a WA government delegation for the ONS Conference.
With patents granted and pending, a solid executive team, strategic partners and growing operator plus government interest, Restore Subsea is positioning via X-Lay® and other emerging technologies to be at the forefront of next-generation subsea decommissioning globally.
