Asia is projected to lead the world in benzene capacity by 2030, driven by rapid growth in the automotive and construction sectors.
A new report indicates the region will add 5.45 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) through 14 new projects, along with 0.05 mtpa from one planned project.
India is expected to be a major contributor to this expansion.
“The majority of additions within the region are from upcoming projects in India, with a total capacity of 3.29 mtpa,” the report states.
Key projects driving this growth include Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar benzene plant 3, slated to begin operations in 2030 with a capacity of 1.16 mtpa.
Reliance Industries Ltd will operate the plant with a 100 per cent equity stake.
Other significant additions include Nayara Energy’s Vadinar benzene plant (0.40 mtpa) and Haldia Petrochemicals’ Cuddalore benzene plant (0.68 mtpa), expected to come online in 2028 and 2029, respectively.
Africa and the Middle East are also expected to see capacity increases, with 0.69 mtpa and 0.64 mtpa, respectively.
Egypt will contribute via two planned projects, while Iran will add capacity through three planned projects.
The former Soviet Union is also set to add 0.25 mtpa via a project in Russia.
