Australian Energy Producers has expressed strong support for the newly released Australian Offshore Resources Decommissioning Roadmap, highlighting its recognition of the gas sector’s importance as the industry prepares for significant decommissioning work in the coming decade.
The Roadmap outlines strategic actions aimed at establishing Australia as a leader in offshore energy infrastructure decommissioning.
This initiative is backed by the industry’s world-class expertise and skills.
Samantha McCulloch, Chief Executive of Australian Energy Producers, highlighted the Roadmap’s acknowledgment of the substantial economic and employment benefits that will stem from the industry’s investment in offshore decommissioning.
“This next wave of investment in decommissioning will extend the economic contribution of our offshore oil and gas facilities, which have long been pivotal in ensuring energy security and delivering economic benefits for Australians,” McCulloch stated.
Key aspects of the Roadmap include:
- Recognising the need for a skilled workforce
- Establishing clear and efficient regulations
- Enhancing collaboration across jurisdictions
These elements are crucial for maximising both economic and environmental outcomes.
McCulloch also pointed out the potential for Australia to learn from international best practices, particularly from the United Kingdom and Norway, in developing environmental and safety standards, as well as financial assurance frameworks.
“Clear and certain regulations are vital for the industry,” McCulloch added — highlighting the need to address current ambiguities in consultation requirements that are causing delays in both decommissioning activities and new gas supply projects.
This Roadmap marks a significant step in Australia’s approach to managing its offshore energy infrastructure, balancing economic opportunities with environmental responsibilities in the evolving energy landscape.
