India set to lead Asia in oil and gas pipeline expansion by 2028

India set to lead Asia in oil and gas pipeline expansion by 2028

India is poised to dominate the oil and gas transmission pipeline network expansion in Asia, according to a new report by GlobalData.

The country is expected to account for over 40 per cent of the region’s total pipeline length additions by 2028, significantly bolstering its energy infrastructure.

The report reveals that India will likely see the commencement of operations for more than 50 planned and announced pipelines by 2028, adding a total transmission pipeline length exceeding 26,000 kilometres.

Of this, approximately 24,000 kilometres will come from planned pipelines that have already secured necessary development approvals.

Bhargavi Gandham, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, noted that natural gas and product pipelines will constitute more than 80 per cent of India’s upcoming transmission pipeline length additions by 2028.

The Kandla-Gorakhpur product pipeline, set to be the longest among the new pipelines with a length of 2,809 km, is expected to become operational in 2025.

This IHB Pvt Ltd-operated pipeline will help meet the growing LPG demand in western Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Another significant addition to India’s pipeline network is the planned Mehsana-Bhatinda natural gas pipeline, stretching 1,834 kilometres.

Operated by GSPL India Gasnet Ltd, this pipeline is also slated for operation by 2025.

The Mumbai-Nagpur-Jharsuguda natural gas pipeline, extending 1,755 kilometres, represents another major contribution to India’s pipeline expansion.

This GAIL (India) Ltd-operated pipeline is expected to commence operations in 2025 as well.

This ambitious pipeline expansion aligns with India’s broader goals to enhance its energy infrastructure and meet the growing petroleum demand across industrial, domestic, and transportation sectors.

The country’s commitment to expanding its gas pipeline network is further evidenced by its US$67 billion investment plan over the next five years, which aims to nearly double the existing network.

As India continues to prioritise energy infrastructure development, these pipeline projects are set to play a crucial role in shaping the country’s energy landscape and strengthening its position as a key player in Asia’s oil and gas sector.
