NERA launches tool to power industry-research collaboration

14 Oct, 2020

Collaboration between Australia’s energy resources industries and the research community has been made easier with the launch of the new Australian Energy Research Capability Finder (AERCF) developed by National Energy Resources Australia (NERA).

Compiled from PhD-led research undertaken by NERA with support from APR.Intern, AERCF contains more than 800 unique points of capability across Australia’s major universities and technical institutions, enabling industry to easily identify the available skills they need for research to address priority challenges.

With an initial focus on oil and gas, energy transition and digital-enabling technology, the Capability Finder — the most comprehensive mapping of Australia’s energy research capability and digital technologies to-date — provides users with an immediate answer to where the most relevant research centres reside across Australia.

NERA CEO, Miranda Taylor, said AERCF solves contemporary operational challenges and assists the resources sector develop, adopt and adapt new technologies that can improve global competitiveness, productivity and support a low-carbon future.

“Australia has a rich history of turning technological breakthroughs into global success stories that have transformed everyday life. However, our strong research history is tied to an equally poor record of commercialising our own research,” she detailed.

“AERCF is designed to overcome these difficulties in building relationships to commission demand-driven research and commercialise outcomes.”

Ms Taylor added that the Capability Finder will help businesses identify the right research partners and current research projects and initiatives that are solving real-world challenges for industry.

“The platform will also assist Australian researchers showcase their capability and identify potential collaborators, reducing risk of repeated works in the future and supporting Australia’s energy resources sector to stay ahead in the complex global energy landscape,” she said.

AERCF is part of NERA’s sector-wide programs and initiatives that are creating connections for growth between industry and world-class research organisations to translate great ideas into real-world outcomes and establish more Australian jobs.
