In a significant move towards sustainable lubricant production, TotalEnergies has announced the acquisition of Tecoil, a Finnish company renowned for its expertise in Re-Refined Base Oils (RRBOs).
This strategic acquisition, revealed on July 1, 2024, positions TotalEnergies at the forefront of the circular economy for lubricants in Europe.
Tecoil, based in Hamina, eastern Finland, currently operates a production facility with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes of RRBOs.
The company has developed a proprietary circular economy network for collecting used lubricants across Europe and supplying its plant, showcasing its commitment to sustainable practices.
At the heart of Tecoil’s operations is an optimised “re-refining” process that transforms used oils into high-quality base oils comparable to virgin base oils.
This innovative approach not only meets the growing customer demand for circularity and sustainability but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of lubricants while maintaining performance levels approved by numerous car manufacturers.
Pierre Duhot, Senior Vice-President Lubricants and Specialties at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating: “The integration of Tecoil into TotalEnergies will allow us to accelerate the use of RRBOs in the production of our high-end lubricants to meet our customers’ growing demand for increasingly high-performance, environmentally friendly products.”
Juha Kokko, CEO of Tecoil, echoed this sentiment, viewing the acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen and develop Tecoil’s activities while addressing new challenges and customer ambitions in the lubricant sector.
TotalEnergies, already a major player in lubricant production and distribution with 42 production sites worldwide, is set to further enhance its position in the market through this acquisition.
The company recently launched its first range of lubricants made from premium regenerated base oils, including Quartz EV3R for passenger vehicles and Rubia EV3R for trucks, in June 2024.
This acquisition marks a significant step in TotalEnergies’ commitment to sustainable energy solutions and circular economy principles, reinforcing its position as a leader in the evolving lubricants industry.
