Woodside Energy has reported a landmark year in 2024, with its Sangomar offshore oil field in Senegal playing a pivotal role in driving record annual production.
The company achieved a remarkable 194 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) for the year, positioning itself at the top end of its production guidance range.
The Sangomar oil field, located approximately 100 kilometres south of Dakar, has been a standout performer, producing 75 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day with an impressive 95 per cent reliability.
Since commencing operations in June 2024, the field has significantly exceeded expectations, generating 16.9 million barrels of crude oil against an initial target of 11.7 million barrels.
In December 2024 alone, the Sangomar field produced 2.96 million barrels, with three cargo shipments totalling 2.94 million barrels successfully exported to the international market.
This achievement underscores Senegal’s growing prominence in the global energy sector and Woodside’s strategic expansion.
The company’s quarterly performance showed a slight 3 per cent decrease from the previous quarter, primarily due to lower seasonal demand at Bass Strait and an unplanned shutdown at Pluto. However, increased production at Sangomar helped mitigate these challenges.
Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill highlighted the significance of the Sangomar field, noting it as a key driver of the company’s record performance.
She highlighted Woodside’s continued progress on growth projects, including the Scarborough Energy Project, which remains on track for its first LNG cargo in 2026.
The success of the Sangomar field not only represents a significant milestone for Woodside but also marks an important moment for Senegal’s emerging oil and gas industry, showcasing the country’s potential as an emerging energy producer.
