PAKISTAN — MOL Pakistan, a subsidiary of MOL Group, has announced three significant gas discoveries in the TAL Block, located in the Kohat Plateau of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
This achievement marks a major milestone for the company, which has been operating in the area for 25 years and producing hydrocarbons for 19 years.
The discoveries were made at the Razgir-1 exploratory well, which was spudded on January 9, 2024, and drilled to a depth of 3,950 metres.
The well was completed ahead of schedule, with ongoing testing operations to determine its full potential.
Three successful well tests have been performed in separate geological formations:
- Lumshiwal-1 Formation: Tested approximately 3,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) of gas and condensate.
- Kawagarh Formation: Yielded about 3,000 boepd.
- Lockhart Formation: Achieved an approximate flow rate of 3,500 boepd.
MOL’s share of the production is expected to range from 400 to 800 boepd, contributing roughly 1 per cent to the group’s total hydrocarbon production.
Zsombor Marton, Executive Vice President of Exploration and Production at MOL Group, commented on the discovery:
“By using state-of-the-art technology combined with the creativity of our highly skilled colleagues, MOL Pakistan was able to secure these discoveries in the TAL Block, a mature area where the company has carried out exploration and production activity for 25 years. This result shows the resilience and professionalism of our team that provides energy supply security in Pakistan for two decades.”
MOL Pakistan has been operating in the country since 1999 and holds interests in four blocks, including operatorship of the TAL and Margalla Blocks.
The company has made 13 commercial discoveries in Pakistan since 2002, with the TAL Block yielding more than 400 million barrels of oil equivalent in proven and probable reserves.
As the second-largest condensate and LPG producer and the fifth-largest gas producer in Pakistan, MOL Pakistan plays a crucial role in the country’s energy security.
The company contributes significantly to MOL Group’s international portfolio, representing 7 per cent of the group’s total hydrocarbon production.
This latest discovery in the TAL Block is expected to enhance Pakistan’s indigenous hydrocarbon supply and bolster its hydrocarbon reserves base.
