Plants & Goodwin (P&G), a subsidiary of US-based methane offsets originator Zefiro Methane, has secured a new contract to plug four orphan wells in Morrow County, Ohio, as part of the Morrow 8 project.
The initiative, funded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), also includes the excavation and capping of two additional wells in Gilead and Perry townships.
The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process, with P&G’s winning bid totalling US$522,233.
This award follows Zefiro Methane’s acquisition of P&G — having first purchased a majority stake in 2023 and then completing the full acquisition in September 2024.
As of late June 2025, P&G has further expanded its Ohio operations by securing the Belmont 6 ODNR orphan well project in Belmont County.
Earlier this year, the company won a US$19.6 million contract for plugging and abandonment management in Ohio, marking significant growth in its remediation efforts.
P&G CEO Luke Plants commented on the project’s relevance, stating: “Zefiro continues to build on its strong historical success in Ohio, which is a key market in the environmental remediation services space given the number of wells that have been drilled across the state over the past several generations.
“The Columbus, Ohio, metro area has more than 2.1 million residents (per the 2020 US Census), and the proximity of Morrow County to this population hub truly underscores how close the unplugged well crisis is to the communities in which so many Americans and their families live.
“We are pleased to have this opportunity to make a difference by way of taking on the Morrow 8 project, and we look forward to continuing to play an active role in cleaning up precious land, water and air resources one well at a time.”
ODNR Director Mary Mertz spotlighted the accelerated pace of Ohio’s orphan well remediation efforts: 353 and 478 wells were remediated in fiscal years 2024 and 2025, respectively — a dramatic increase from the 15 wells plugged in FY2017.
P&G has already remediated 28 wells under Ohio’s state-funded program in 2025 and holds current contracts for an additional 23 wells.
Catherine Flax, Zefiro’s interim CEO, highlighted the importance of environmental remediation services in a recent shareholder communication, noting: “Their role in driving shareholder value and complementing other business ventures such as the sale of emission offset credits to companies Mercuria and EDF Trading.”
With the Morrow 8 project, Ohio’s ongoing state-funded strategy to remediate legacy oil and gas infrastructure remains firmly on track, directly benefiting local communities and reinforcing the market’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
