OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe, has initiated the construction of a state-of-the-art sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO) production unit at its Petrobrazi refinery in Romania.
The facility, set to become operational in 2028, will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes, positioning OMV Petrom as the first major producer of sustainable fuels in the region.
The €750 million investment is divided between €560 million for the SAF/HVO unit and €190 million for two green hydrogen production facilities.
This significant undertaking aligns with OMV Petrom’s Strategy 2030, which aims to support the energy transition and reduce carbon emissions.
Christina Verchere, CEO of OMV Petrom, emphasised the importance of this investment: “Sustainable fuels are essential to decarbonise transportation, especially in sectors where electrification is difficult to implement, such as aviation.”
She also revealed that between 2022 and 2030, the company is allocating 35 per cent of its investment budget towards projects supporting the energy transition in Romania and the surrounding region.
The new facility is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for adjustments in raw materials such as used oil and animal fats.
It will also enable changes in the mix of finished products, including SAF, HVO, bio-naphtha, and bio-LPG, based on market demands and feedstock availability.
Radu Căprău, OMV Petrom’s executive board member responsible for refining and marketing, highlighted the project’s significance: “This investment strengthens the role of the Petrobrazi refinery in providing the necessary fuels for mobility — today and in the future.”
He added that the project employs new and innovative technologies, marking a first-of-its-kind installation in the operating region.
The construction of this sustainable fuels unit represents a major step forward in OMV Petrom’s commitment to the energy transition.
By integrating SAF and HVO production with existing infrastructure, the company is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions in Southeastern Europe.
