BRAZIL: TotalEnergies, in partnership with Petrobras and other consortium members, has announced the final investment decision (FID) for the second development phase of the Atapu and Sépia fields, located in the prolific pre-salt Santos Basin offshore Brazil.
The Atapu field, which has been producing since 2020 through the P-70 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit with a capacity of 150,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), will see the addition of a new-built FPSO with a production capacity of 225,000 bopd.
TotalEnergies holds a 15 per cent interest in the Atapu field, alongside Petrobras (65.7 per cent, operator), Shell (16.7 per cent), Petrogal (1.7 per cent), and PPSA (0.9 per cent).
Similarly, the Sépia field, which commenced production in 2021 through the Carioca FPSO unit with a capacity of 180,000 bopd, will also receive a new-built FPSO with a production capacity of 225,000 bopd.
TotalEnergies owns a 16.9 per cent interest in the Sépia field, partnering with Petrobras (55.3 per cent, operator), Petronas (12.7 per cent), QatarEnergy (12.7 per cent), and Petrogal (2.4 per cent).
The two new FPSOs are expected to start production in 2029 and have been designed with sustainability in mind.
They will feature an all-electric configuration and incorporate technologies such as waste heat recovery, closed flare, cargo oil tank gas recovery, and variable speed drive for compressors and pumps, minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
Nicolas Terraz, President of Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, emphasised the strategic importance of this decision, stating: “The decision to launch Sépia-2 and Atapu-2 is a new milestone in our strong growth story in Brazil, a core area for the company thanks to its world-class low-emission and low-cost oil resources.”
With the upcoming startups of Mero-2 in late 2023, Mero-3 in 2024, and Mero-4 in 2025, Brazil is expected to account for more than 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in equity production for TotalEnergies.
The Sépia-2 and Atapu-2 FPSOs, the tenth and eleventh for TotalEnergies in Brazil, will contribute to maintaining the company’s production in this key country above 200,000 boepd at their plateau.
