Woodside Energy has announced a major milestone in the development of its Scarborough Energy Project with the successful completion of the trunkline installation.
The 433-kilometre pipeline, which took approximately 12 months to install, will play a crucial role in transporting gas from the offshore Scarborough field to the onshore Pluto LNG processing facility in Karratha.
Liz Westcott, Woodside’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Australia, emphasised the significance of this achievement, stating that the trunkline is a critical piece of infrastructure for the project.
The installation required specialised vessels and expert teams, showcasing the technical complexity of the undertaking.
With the trunkline now in place, Woodside is shifting its focus to the safe execution of the remaining project scopes.
The company is targeting the first Scarborough LNG cargo for 2026, marking another important milestone in the project’s timeline.
The Scarborough Energy Project has now surpassed the two-thirds completion mark, positioning itself to meet the growing global demand for lower-carbon and reliable energy sources.
Once operational, the project is expected to supply up to 225 terajoules of domestic gas per day to the Western Australian market, contributing significantly to the region’s energy needs.
Beyond its energy production capabilities, the Scarborough project is set to deliver substantial economic benefits.
Projections indicate that it will generate more than $50 billion in direct and indirect taxes for the Australian economy over its lifespan.
Additionally, the project is creating over 3,000 jobs during its construction phase and is expected to sustain an average of 600 jobs throughout its operational period.
As the project progresses, Woodside faces the challenge of balancing energy production with environmental concerns.
The company is committed to playing a role in the world’s energy transformation by limiting its own emissions and reducing global emissions through the supply of cleaner energy.
With the successful installation of the trunkline, Woodside has overcome a significant hurdle in the development of the Scarborough Energy Project.
As the company moves forward with the remaining phases of the project, industry observers will be watching closely to see how this major energy initiative unfolds and its impact on Australia’s energy landscape and economy.
