In a bid to bolster the role of natural gas in the country’s cleaner energy future, Australia’s oil and gas industry has appointed a new Director — Peter Kos — for Victoria and New South Wales.
Peter Kos, a seasoned public affairs professional with over 30 years of experience, has been selected to spearhead efforts in securing a reliable gas supply for the two states amidst their current regulatory challenges.
The appointment comes at a crucial juncture as Australia charts its path towards net zero emissions.
Kos’s role will be pivotal in navigating the complex landscape of regulatory uncertainties and investment barriers that have hampered the development of new onshore gas projects in Victoria and NSW.
Addressing the pressing need for a secure gas supply, Kos emphasised the importance of enabling industry confidence through strategic investments.
“Millions of households and businesses in NSW and Victoria rely on gas for their energy needs,” he stated — highlighting the critical role gas plays in ensuring energy security and price stability.
Kos also criticised the current regulatory environment in both states, citing bans and delays that hinder the development of new gas supplies.
“Victoria demonises gas for ideological reasons while pushing more homes onto its fragile, coal-based electricity grid,” he lamented.
Similarly, he noted NSW’s offshore drilling ban and the protracted approval process for the Narrabri Gas Project as further obstacles to securing a robust gas supply.
Australian Energy Producers Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch expressed confidence in Kos’s ability to drive advocacy efforts and provide support to industry members.
“Peter will be an important and authoritative voice for our members at a critical time for Australian energy policy,” she affirmed.
As Australia grapples with the dual challenges of meeting its energy needs and reducing emissions, the appointment of Kos signals a proactive step towards securing a sustainable energy future for the nation.
