Beetaloo Energy Australia has reached a major milestone in its Northern Territory operations, announcing a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with the Carpentaria Pilot Project following a series of crucial regulatory and stakeholder approvals.
The company confirmed it has executed an agreement with the Northern Land Council (NLC), acting on behalf of the Mambaliya Rrumburriya Wuyaliya Aboriginal Land Trust, enabling the sale of appraisal gas from Exploration Permit 187 (EP 187).
This approval marks a significant step in progressing the project towards commercial gas production in Australia’s highly prospective Beetaloo Sub-basin.
All necessary environmental clearances have been granted by the Northern Territory government, paving the way for construction of the Carpentaria Gas Plant (CGP), in-field infrastructure, and the drilling, completion, and tie-in of up to 10 additional wells under EP 187.
Establishing the CGP will allow Beetaloo Energy to process test gas and move towards early-stage gas sales, with full production targeted for 2026.
Beetaloo Energy managing director Alex Underwood described the investment decision as a defining moment for the company.
“This is a landmark moment for Beetaloo Energy, allowing the company to commence gas sales from EP 187 in 2026,” Underwood said.
He added that the company has already initiated civil construction and site upgrade works using internal capital resources.
“We have separately commenced the process to drawdown the Macquarie Midstream Infrastructure Facility, which was announced in November 2024, and we intend to draw funds under that facility when required,” Underwood said.
“This FID follows the incredible efforts of the Beetaloo Energy team whose tireless work is bringing this project to life,” he continued.
“We deeply appreciate the support of our shareholders, financiers, the NT Government, the traditional owners of the land on which we operate, and our many supporters across the NT.
“They all understand the critical importance of the Beetaloo Basin to drive energy security and economic prosperity for the NT, Australia and the broader region for decades to come.”
Beetaloo Energy also confirmed it secured federal approval to amend the exploration deed for EP 187 under subsection 27(3) of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976, allowing the sale and beneficial use of gas.
This regulatory step enables the company to transition from exploration to pilot production activities while ensuring compliance with land rights legislation.
Beetaloo Energy entered into a gas sales agreement with the NT government in 2024 and previously received authorisation for the beneficial use of test gas produced during appraisal.
These measures align with the NT’s strategic goal to attract investment in onshore gas development and bolster domestic energy supply.
The broader Beetaloo Basin, located roughly 500 kilometres southeast of Darwin, is regarded as one of Australia’s most promising shale gas provinces.
The Australian government’s “Beetaloo Strategic Basin Plan” estimates the basin could contribute billions in GDP and create thousands of jobs over the coming decades.
