Santos inks new gas supply agreement with Rio Tinto

Santos has signed a new gas supply agreement with Rio Tinto. Under the agreement, Santos will supply up to 15 petajoules (PJs) of natural gas to Rio Tinto commencing in late 2021. Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Gallagher, said Rio has been a long-term buyer of gas from Santos and they look forward to the strong partnership continuing. “We have been supplying natural gas to Rio for many years. West Barracouta commences natural gas supply to Australia’s east coast

Esso Australia Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Australia Pty Ltd, has announced the commissioning of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture’s West Barracouta natural gas field in the Bass Strait offshore of Victoria. The West Barracouta gas development has involved the drilling of two gas production wells and the construction of associated subsea gas production facilities to access gas in the existing Barracouta field. AGL withdraws works approval for floating gas terminal at Crib Point

On 9 April 2021, Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) received notification that AGL had withdrawn its works approval for a floating gas terminal at Crib Point in Westernport Bay. As a result, the EPA will no longer be making a decision under section 19B of the Environment Protection Act 1970 in relation to the project. Buru to commence major drilling program in the Canning Basin

Buru Energy Limited will commence a major drilling program in the Canning Basin in Western Australia in June. The program includes a three well drilling program and an extensive 2D seismic program of some 1,100 kilometres of data acquisition. Production from Buru Energy's Ungani Oilfield, located approximately 90 kilometres east of Broome, has continued to be impacted by wet weather with the Ungani access road being closed intermittently due to heavy rainfall. Late wet season rains have also resulted in the closure of the Great Northern Highway export route to all traffic on a number of occasions. Gas import terminal ruled out due to environmental impacts

The Victorian Government has today ruled out a proposal to establish a gas import terminal at Crib Point in Western Port and to construct an approximately 57-kilometre long pipeline from the terminal to Pakenham. Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne, concluded that marine discharges from the proposed AGL and APA project would have unacceptable effects on the environment in Western Port, which is listed as a Ramsar wetland of international significance.
